My dog's anal gland popped. How do I care for it and prevent issues?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Fox Terrier | Male | neutered | 3 years and 3 months old | 13 lbs

My mini fox terrier has had a swollen infected anal gland, I took him to the vet and they put him on antibiotics and pain relief for a week, they said the anal gland was too swollen and painful to express and to just let it pop on its own. It has now popped and its day 3 of antibiotics, do I just keep it clean? Is there anything else I should do? Will this clear up on its own? Thank you kindly

This can be painful and messy so I recommend using a hot compress on the area several times a day to keep it clean and draining. Then I apply a thin film of antibacterial ointment on the surface. As Milo will lick the area using a cone or restraint collar to prevent licking will help it heal faster. Once the sac has ruptured it usually will heal quickly on its own. Continue the antibiotics until they are finished. To prevent this from happening again I would have Milo's anal sacs expressed regularly, every two to three months. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to help you care for Milo.
