My puppy is peeing constantly after eating ham. Is this normal?

I gave my puppy ham for the first time a few hours ago and now he is peeing nonstop. He has been peeing several times within the last few hours. Is this something that is typical with ham consumption?

Yes it can be caused by the ham consumption because ham has a lot of salt in it. It would have make him very thirsty, and thus leading him to pee a lot more. This should pass, but do make sure he has access to plenty of water. Do NOT give him any more ham or pork products. In addition to the high salt content, pork products are extremely fatty and cause pancreatitis in dogs which is fatal without treatment. It is never recommend to give a dog ham or any other pork product. I hope this helps.

It's not recommended to feed your dog ham because it's very fatty and can cause both GI upset and pancreatitis. It sounds like he has an upset stomach, so I would withhold food for 12-24 hours, then feed a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day. You can then slowly add back in his normal diet. If he vomits in the absence of food, he vomits the bland diet, develops diarrhea, stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, he will need to see a vet right away.

If I do not restrict water and have it out in a bowl all day my 8 week old puppy is peeing every few minutes. He knows the outside pee spot and will go there if I take him out in time, but he doesnt seem to have any control over just letting it go in
Thank you for using Boop by Petco! It is definitely normal for puppies to urinate more frequently than adult dogs. Every few minutes is excessive. Some puppies are just fascinated by water and drink constantly regardless of thirst. The 25 ounces is about double what Wallace needs per day, dog’s typically drink 1-2 ounces per pound. You should have him seen by a vet to rule out a UTI, kidney disease, or very rare forms of diabetes. I hope this helps and am happy to answer any other questions you have!

My puppy is drinking water and peeing minutes after, Is this normal?
This is REALLY normal! Most puppies are so small and there isn't much room from point A to point B so it is really common for them to drink and shortly have to pee afterwards. Try to keep a close eye on her schedule so you can take her outside shortly after you see her drinking. I hope this helps!

My puppy is peeing very very often. He peed 5 times in the past 10 minutes. He currently (one week ago) ate 3 raisins but we got him to vomit 2 of them. Could they have anything to do with each other?
Hi, thanks for using Boop by Petco! Your puppy is adorable! Raisins have the potential to cause kidney failure which causes the dog to act lethargic, not eat, maybe vomit and likely drink and urinate more. If your puppy isn’t doing any of those things I doubt the raisin has anything to do with it. He may have a urinary tract infection or crystals in his urine. I recommend making an appointment with your Vet for tomorrow and bring a irons sample. I good this helps and I wish you the best!

Poor girl. She is likely trembling because she is in discomfort. Ham is high in fat and often-times salt, so this can irritate her GI tract and potentially her pancreas. If the shaking/trembling continues and she also seems unstable (falling over, mental depression, staring off in space, seizing, etc), then she may be fine for now. If she develops overt neurological symptoms as mentioned above, then it is best to get her evaluated by your vet right away and not wait until morning. However, the likelihood of serious neurological deficits following ingestion of ham is very unlikely. The more logical explanation for her shivering, is that she is sick to her stomach. Offer her a bland diet of boiled plain chicken and rice or cottage cheese for several days, but make sure to fast her for 12 hrs first before doing so. If she eats well and holds down her food, with no diarrhea, then she will likely be ok.

Thank you for using Boop by Petco. Unfortunately, I can't really tell you what happened either. I would not be too overly concerned at this stage. Just monitor her to see if it keeps happening. Watch her closely to see if she is drinking excessive amounts of water. Bladder infections, urinary crystals, kidney disease, liver disease, bladder stones, and even tumors of the bladder can causes excessive water consumption and subsequent excessive urination. Diabetes is also a consideration of some species of hamster like the Campbell's dwarf. For now, just monitor her and feel free to post again if you have more questions.

I wouldn't be too concerned about increased urination - the canned food has an increased water content and this may be the reason she is urinating more often. If you notice blood in her urine or if she seems to be straining to urinate while passing small amounts you may want to check in with your vet to make sure she doesn't have a urinary tract infection.

My dog ate normally yesterday except she had ham. Today she’s throwing up, is weak, has a decreased appetite, and is out of it. Could she have food poisoning? If so what do I do?
High fat food like ham can sometimes cause pancreatitis in dogs. We've noticed that our dog drinks constantly, and continues to pee constantly. He's a year and 3 months old. His pee is clear almost constantly as well. He also loves to lick anyone that is super sweaty as well. Thoughts?
He will pee constantly if he’s drinking that much. He may also be losing sodium in the urine causing him to want to lick sweaty people to get additional salt. That much drinking and urine are not normal and could be a sign of kidney disease. I recommend a veterinary exam and blood work to check his kidney function and check for diabetes which also could cause these signs. Early diagnosis of a medical problem will help get him the proper treatment if needed and could prevent progesssion of the disease. Thanks for using Boop by Petco to help you care for Maui.

If this is a one time thing I wouldn’t be too concerned, but if Toothless is urinating more frequently throughout the day, if he is straining to urinate, or if he seems to be drinking a lot more water as well you should see your veterinarian.
