Is my dog underweight on a raw diet? How can I help him gain weight?

My dog was 6 kg.. Switched to raw diet went down to 5kg.. But now gradually going down to 4.5kg.. Is he under weight? How to make him get back to 5kg? Also he whines a lot before I give him food

I see Jay Junior is a Bichon Frise. They can weigh between 3-5kg, so at 4.5kg he may be at a healthy weight for his size. I recommend checking his body condition score using the website I provide below, and that will help you see if he is underweight or not. You can feed him more if you want to get him back to 5kg, but only increase his diet a little bit as you don't want to overfeed him. He may whine a lot before feeding because he's hungry. I would recommend having her body condition score figured out first to determine if she is indeed underweight. Dogs can vary quite a bit in size, even if they are the same breed - so it's more important to look at your dog's body condition to determine if he is under (or over) his ideal weight rather than comparing to averages for the breed. Ideally, you should be able to feel his ribs easily with your hands when you run them down his sides, and he should have a visible "waistline" or abdominal tuck just behind the ribcage. The ribs and hipbones should not be visibly jutting out of his fur, as this would be a sign that he is too thin. If his body condition is normal, I would not recommend increasing his food or trying to make him gain weight, as it's not good for growing dogs to be overweight at this age - it's very hard on their joints and can predispose them to orthopedic problems such as hip dysplasia later in life. hello. my frenchie is 8.5 kg. i think that she is skinny, because i can see her ribs too. however, her apetite and mood isnt bad. should i be concerned?
I recommend googling Purina body condition scoring chart and determining if the the degree to which you can see and feel her ribs is consistent with the lower body condition scores. If so, increasing her daily food ration slightly and re-assessing her body condition score in 2-4 weeks is advised. Good luck!

First off, I would check with your vet to make sure that he actually does need to gain weight. I often see dogs that are a very healthy weight but the owners think that their dog needs to gain weight because they are used to seeing overweight dogs. A good rule of thumb is that in short-haired dogs you should be able to actually see the last rib in the rib cage, not just be able to feel ribs. If your vet does indeed think Blue is too thin, he/she may be able to recommend a good high quality prescription diet like Royal Canin High Energy that is designed to provide increased calories without causing digestive problems.

Geriatric time for my dog. I’m wanting to fatten him up. We are on raw food
I would recommend putting Motzart on a commercial senior diet. Some preferred brands are Royal Canin, Hills and Purina. I would not recommend a raw diet, especially at this age because Motzart will not be getting a balanced diet and will be at risk for diseases such as pancreatitis, bowel obstructions, and infectious diseases like salmonella and E. coli. The last time I weighed my dog he was just over 11kg and I feed him 130g of Hills dry food twice a day. Am I giving him enough or should I increase the amount of food?
There is no way for us to answer this question without seeing your dog and without knowing his size and whether or not he is currently underweight or overweight. So, don't get too hung up on that until he is closer to one year. The best advice I can give you with limited information is to use the instructions on the bag of food you are feeding. If you give a lot of treats use the lower end of the feeding range they give you. If you start seeing his ribs, he's too thin. If he loses his "waist" he's too heavy. A little information may be helpful like how old is your dog and what breed. Also, is he too thin? A photograph will help as well if possible. Make sure he is up to date on his deworming and that he has had his stool checked recently for other parasites which may steal nutrients and cause poor body weight.
