My dog has weak back legs after mating. Is this normal for males?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Rottweiler | Male | unneutered | 5 years and 1 month old | 45 lbs

So i came home to find out my male has got to my bitch who is in season. However he has been very weak on his back legs and struggling to get up and lie down. Is this normal in a male dog after mating?

No, it's not the usual behavior after mating. I'm concerned that he has some underlying hip or back problem that has been aggravated from the exercise breeding the female dog. Let him rest for a few days and if he hasn't improved I recommend a veterinary exam and X-rays of his hips and spine. I suspect he has some arthritis and this has caused the pain and weakness getting up and down. They can confirm a diagnosis and give Kash pain medication if needed. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to help you care for Kash.
