Why is my female dog vomiting and breathing heavily? Is it serious?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Female | unspayed | 15 lbs

I have a small female dog called Bony. During the day she vomited from time to time and now she has a heavy breathing. Could this be connected? Is this symptomatic of something else? Please help me! P.S.: she ate her usual Purina and nothing else.

I'm sorry Bony is sick! Heavy breathing can be a sign of pain, and it can be connected to the vomiting. I see that she isn't spayed, and in dogs who aren't spayed, a pyometra is a risk. This is when the uterus becomes infected, and it does cause pain and vomiting. A pyometra is fatal without treatment, and is considered a medical emergency. She could also have a GI illness, a foreign body, or pancreatitis causing her symptoms. Because I can't see her in person to rule anything out out and due to the fact that a pyometra is so deadly, my recommendation is to take her into a vet now. The vet can diagnose what is causing her symptoms and how best to treat it. Please take her into an ER vet clinic; if there isn't one in your area, there will be a vet on call for emergencies. The information to reach that vet is found on a clinic's answering machine or website. I hope this helps!
