My dog pants after heartworm. Is L-carnitine good for her heart?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | spayed | 4 years and 9 months old | 45 lbs

My rescue dog Bella, was treated for heart worm and is fine now. She seems to pant when running, as if she is out of breath. 1. Can this be a result of her having had heart worm? 2. I had a boxer (70 lbs) who took L-carnitine 250 to prevent heart problems prone to this breed. (He lived to 11+ and died of cancer.) Will this also strengthen and be good for Bella's heart? 3. If yes, what would you recommend for a 40-45 lb. dog? Thanks for any advice you can give me.

Heartworm infection can result in damage to the heart and lungs depending on the severity of the condition prior to treatment. Since Bella is symptomatic, an exam with your veterinarian would be recommended. An EKG can diagnose abnormal heart rhythm and and echocardiogram (ultrasound of the heart) can assess cardiac architecture and function. L-carnitine won't harm your dog, any additional amounts not metabolized will be broken down and excreted. Published doses range from 50-100mg/kg body weight. It can be given up to three times a day. Confirm a dose with your veterinarian. He or she may also have a preferred source or supplier.
