My cat died after eating food: seizures, foaming. What happened?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | unneutered | 5 months and 15 days old

My cat passed away after eating gormet chicken food in white sauce and we found him having a seizure and foaming from the mouth and have avoided the food since but never understood why hE passed away. Is it likeyly that he had an allergic reaction to the food or could it be something else?

A reaction is a possibility but rate since he has likely been exposed to chicken before. He may have choked or aspirated on a piece if he was eating quickly and not chewing properly. This can lead to seizures and foaming from lack of oxygen

Hi, thanks again for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Thanks for letting me know that Willow was only 5 months old! The most common cause of seizures in a kitten that young is FIP. Other potential infectious differentials include FeLV/FIV, toxoplasmosis, cryptococcus, aberrant parasites, and rabies. Other causes of seizures include trauma, hydrocephalus, storage diseases, portosystemic shunt (congenital liver problem), thiamin deficinecy, lead poisoning, ethylene glycol, neoplasia (especially meningioma or lymphoma) and organophosphates. I would check online to see if that specific food has a recall on it. I hope this helps!
