My pregnant cat has an old, badly broken leg. What can I do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | unspayed | 4 years and 1 month old

My cat broke her leg two months ago. My mom doesn't have enough money to take her to the vet, but it is still REALLY bad. It's the front left leg, and she bends it in the middle and uses the whole thing as a leg. It's HORRIBLE. Now she's heavily pregnant on top of that. My mom tried wrapping to but she always takes it off. What do I do? I don't want her leg to be so messed up forever!

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I am sorry that you and Bijoux are going through this! She really needs to see a Vet. There are low cost Veterinary clinics in some SPCAs. Cats are sometimes miraculous healers but it has been so long. She may just need it splinted. But if splinted she would absolutely need to be crated in a large dog crate for 6-8 weeks and not allowed outside. If it can't heal with a splint it may need to be amputated. Cats can live a long happy pain free life with 3 legs. Allowing her to be outside and walking and jumping on a broken leg for sure isn't going to help it heal. I hope you can find some help for her. Since she is pregnant sedation may have to wait until at least the kittens are born. Good luck!
