My kitten is getting fat. How much and when should I feed him daily?

So I got oliver 2 months ago. I have been free feeding him but he's gotten a bit fat so I want to start scheduling when he eats. What time should I feed him and how much?

This is a great question! I see that Oliver is a kitten so it's not recommended to limit food since he is still growing, but it's fine to put him on a feeding schedule. On his bag of kitten food, there will be a daily recommended amount to feed him. Take that amount and divide it into two equal portions, one to feed in the morning and one to feed in the evening. Great question! You have two options with feeding Uli. There will be a daily allotment of food to be fed on her food bag, and you can either leave the food out all day for her to eat whenever she wants, or you can divide it up into two equal portions. Give one of the portions in the morning and one at night. At her age, she should still be on a kitten formulated food. Once she is 12 months of age, you can switch her to an adult food. How many calories does a kitten need per day?

Can I give him only one handful for breakfast lunch and dinner
Since Oliver is so small, then yes you can feed him a small handful three times a day. Cats enjoy nibbling throughout the day anyways so a good way to feed them if to pre-measure their total amount of food for the day and give them just a portion of it several times a day. This way they aren’t over eating but they feel like they are getting fed multiple times a day. I hope This helps!

Hello, depending on her lifestyle, indoor only cats should be fed atleast twice daily. This can be a variety of dry and wet food and should not exceed more than 1 cup of dry food per day or more than 1 can per day. There may be differences depending on how many calories each food contains so it is hard to determine this. Your kitten should be consuming around 201 Kcal per day. Hope this helps and best of luck.

You can free feed. By that, I mean leave her kitten food out all day, and she can nibble when she likes. Her kitten food will have the feeding instructions on the bag, so give her the daily recommended allotment. I hope this helps!

I can understand your dilemma here. You can try offering her 1/4 cup 3 times a day and see if his curbs her hunger. The food recommendations on the bag are more like guidelines. I would also recommend weaning her off the milk over the next week, because she is old enough where she doesn’t need it after 6 weeks of age. You should be aware that there are some cats who are food obsessed and they will eat as much as you will feed them. This could lead to obesity and many other health conditions. The proper amount to feed should be listed on the package of food. This is based upon the amount of calories in the food. This is a starting point and there could be some deviation. Simba should be eating a kitten food. You also need to look at his body condition score to know if he is too thin (meaning he needs to eat more), too heavy (meaning he needs to eat less) or just right (meaning you are feeding the correct amount). Since he is growing, you will need to increase the food by a little bit every 1-2 weeks. It really depends on how much she weighs. There should be a feeding guideline on the bag of cat food based on the weight of your kitten. Follow that guideline and then adjust based on her growth and weight. Split the total amount into three feedings per day.

Hi Ashley! I typically prefer keeping all growing cats on kitten food until they are 1 year old. Since Mars seems to be gaining too much weight on the kitten food, consider cutting back on his portion rather than switching to adult food. There is no need to worry about feeding some adult food tonight. Simply go back to kitten food tomorrow and hang onto his adult food in a sealed container for a few more months. When possible, Mars should be fed 2 meals per day. Use the chart on his bag of food to get a sense for how much he should eat based on his weight (use his ideal body weight rather than his current weight since he is overweight) and age. Strictly control how many treats he receives and avoid any table food, as these tend to be the biggest culprits in weight gain.

Thanks for using Boop by Petco! He should be eating about 275 - 300 calories per day to continue to grow at a healthy weight. It is not based on the volume of food but more so based on the amount of calories in the food you feed him. This information should be in the back of the bag or can you feed him or possibly online.
