My puppy ate a potty pad. Is it dangerous? What should I do?

Hello! My 11 week puppy was left in his kennel when I went to work today and when I came home tonight he had eaten and chewed up his puppy potty pad. He ate at least a good corner of it. Should he be okay or should I be concerned?

That was naughty of Hamlet to eat part of his puppy potty pad! It won't contain anything toxic, but given it's absorbent nature, it can cause an obstruction in the GI tract. Since he didn't eat the fully pad, it's likely he will pass it without problem. Monitor him for signs of obstruction which include anorexia, lethargic, vomiting, and diarrhea. If you see any of those signs, take him into a vet immediately. I would tape down his potty pads to keep him from chewing on them, and give him chew toys in his kennel to keep him occupied while you are gone. I hope this helps!

Thank you for contacting Boop by Petco with your question about Sulley and for providing a picture, it's very helpful. This is common behavior and the concern is that if he eats enough of it, it could cause an obstruction. You can tape down the edges of the puppy pad so he cannot pull it up to eat it. You can also start crate training him. This will prevent him from eating puppy pads but it will also help with potty training. The crate will provide him a small space where he can feel safe in it when you are gone. You will have to slowly train him to get used to a crate. Start putting him in it when you are home and sitting nearby so he doesn't think you are abandoning him, and slowly increase the time he is in it. He can have toys in the crate, and puzzle toys with treats in it that he has to figure out how to get the treats out. You can put a teaspoon of peanut butter in a Kong toy and freeze it in the freezer overnight, then give it to him in the crate. That will keep him o

Ok so my friend's little beagle puppy ate half of his pee pads yesterday, what should she do?
Keep an eye on Duke for now. These pads may pass or they may cause an obstruction. Signs of an obstruction include vomiting, diarrhea, anorexia, and lethargy. If your friend sees any of those signs, have her take him into a vet immediately. Best of luck.

I just came home and my puppy ate his pad. Will it go through his system or should I be worried?
There is no guarantee it will pass. It really depends on your puppies GI system as some are more forgiving than others. if it was shredded and seollowed in smaller pieces then it has a better chance of passing it than large pieces. All you can do at this point is monitor for any signs of an obstruction such as vomiting and diarrhea, lethargy or a change in appetite. If these are noticed then he should be checked right away

Well that was naughty of Hachi to eat that! It looks like a small piece of plastic, so it may pass without problem, but there is always a chance that it could become stuck in his GI tract and cause an obstruction. The best thing to do is take him into a vet immediately to induce vomiting with a shot to get it out of his stomach and prevent any chance of obstruction. There may be an ER vet in your area; if not, there will be a vet on call for emergencies. The information to reach that vet is found on a clinic's answering machine or website. Now you can monitor him over the next couple of days to see if it passes. Check his poop to see if you can find it. If he stops eating, starts vomiting, has diarrhea, becomes very lethargic, has blood in his poop, or stops pooping, then the plastic piece may be stuck and you will have to rush him into a vet immediately. In that case, he would likely need surgery to remove it. Good luck, I hope this helps!

Thanks for your question. It sounds like you have a naughty boy on your hands. At this point, it sounds like he isn't currently having symptoms. If he stops eating or starts vomiting, you will want to seek veterinary attention. Unfortunately, there are some dogs that are repeat offenders and continue to get themselves into trouble. If not already, he may need to be crated when alone, with nothing but a metal water bowl in the crate with him. I hope it makes it through this and stays out of trouble for a while.

Bad little dog! :) This is quite common for puppies. If you think he is eating the pad especially the plastic part, then this is a concern. I would consider start crate training him instead of pad training because it could be safer for him long term. I worry if he ingests a large piece of plastic that it could get stuck in his intestinal tract. You could try to use towels in place of the pee pad if crate training isn't any option. My 6 yo pom-terrier mix ate part of a pee-pee pad (palm size). What should I do?
That's a tough one. Simba is so tiny, so a palm size sheet of plastic could possibly cause an obstruction or could pass through in the stool. Your options are to wait and hope it passes, but take him to the vet if he starts vomiting or having a decreased appetite or energy level for x-rays and possible emergency surgery. OR, you take him to an emergency clinic now that has an endoscope and see if they can remove it (which would still require general anesthesia and may not be successful because the plastic may just fall apart when they try to pull it out). There's not a clear right answer here because their are risks with both options. I'd give him a 50-70% chance of passing it on his own. I wish I could give you a more definite answer, but I hope that helps you decide how you want to proceed.

It is very possible, and I would be worried if he's now having vomiting and diarrhea, as that may indicate a partial blockage (where some but not all stool is able to properly pass). If his symptoms continue, or none of the pee pad is passing, I would schedule a vet visit immediately to check for foreign body.

My puppy ate the mat that we use for him to pee. We have made him sick with water. Is there any medication we can give him? Also is can he eat and drink?
Hi, thanks for using Boop by Petco! If Kobu chewed up and ingested pieces of a wee-wee pad then he is at risk for that material to become stuck. If you made him vomit, did he vomit up ALL the pieces that were missing? If he didn't vomit up pieces then hopefully he will pass them in his stool. I would feed him small amounts of water and a bland diet as small frequent meals for several days. If he refuses to eat, starts vomiting and is lethargic he needs to be seen ASAP by a Veterinarian. They will need to take X-rays to make sure he doesn't need surgery to remove the pad pieces. I hope this helps and I wish you and Kobu the best!

Oh no, that was naughty of Theo! Feminine pads are dangerous in that they are meant to absorb liquid, and thus expand when in contact with fluids. This pad can expand in his stomach due to liquids in it, and then cause a blockage in his GI tract. If he does end up with a blockage in his GI tract, he would need surgery to remove it. It would be best to take him into an ER now where he can be safely induced to vomit with a shot to get the pad out and prevent an blockage from occurring. I would take him in immediately, as vomiting has to be induced within two hours after ingestion. Good luck, I hope everything turns out ok with Theo!
