Dog breathing heavy, pale, terrified, and hiding. Is it an emergency?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | spayed | 28 lbs

Earlier this evening, my dog started breathing heavy and acting terrified for no reason. Her heart rate seemed elavated. She ended up deciding to lay under a desk and has been there for the past 3 hrs. She got up once and stood staring around then went to lay under another couch, decided not to, and went toward the door but then ran back under the desk. Now, she is lying there in a position that is keeping her stomach slightly off the ground. Also, her skin is super pale and still breathing odd

Oh my. These are all very worrisome symptoms of a potential underlying blood loss conditon or heart condition. Faith needs to be seen by a vet right away! An ER vet will be available after hours. The vet will listen to her heart and want to run some diagnostic tests (i.e. Bloodwork \- radiographs) to determine the underlying problem first before deciding what, if anything, can be done to help stabilize her conditon. I do wish you all the best at the vet and hope that Faith can recover from her ailment. Best of luck!
