My 14-year-old cat has a watery, red eye. Should I go to the ER vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Mediumhair | Female | spayed | 13 years and 6 months old | 7 lbs

My 14 year old cat has one watery eye. There is redness in the tissue under the eyelids and possibly a bit of swelling. This has been going on for 3 days and my vet can't get me in for another 5 days. I'm wondering if I should go to the emergency veterinarian hospital or if it's probably ok waiting 5 days. Thank you!

I always lean toward being more careful with eye conditions. Even though you could likely wait 5 days, I would probably go to the emergency vet if it was my cat. And it is likely uncomfortable for Roxie, so I would like to get it treated. Eye conditions can become very severe very quickly, so I would have it evaluated sooner rather than later. I hope that helps! Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
