My rescue dog won't walk on leash. How can I make walks enjoyable?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 2 years and 8 months old | 17 lbs

My mixed-breed 2yr shelter dog doesn't like to walk. He likes to sit and look around. Sometimes we have to carry him for a block or so to get him away from the house. We don't like to drag him. We've tried treats and gentle coaxing. We have had him a year, but this hasn't gotten better. Help!

You may want to try having a friend come with their dog and walk together. Having a confident older dog leading the way may encourage yours. Also going to an obedience class may help Django learn to walk and be relaxed around people and other dogs. They will practice leash walking and it will improve his confidence and social skills. Using an anti anxiety supplement such as Solliquin can relax him while you are working on the training. Be patient and he should improve with time and training. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to help you care for Django.
