Why is my senior dog with kidney disease coughing and retching?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Hi, my 10 year old springer spaniel has stage 4 kidney disease, he is on medication ace inhibitor and water tablets, still very active and happy, even though they said it would be. Matter of weeks he would survive, that was 2 months ago. He does have a bloated belly and is having urine and feaces accidents at night. He has now started coughing/ reaching is this the fluids causing this or is it nausea, he has been sick but in very rare occasions.

I'm so sorry to hear that you are having to deal with kidney disease. One of the things they report in people with kidney disease is nausea from a build up of toxins that the kidneys should be filtering out if they are working properly. If you think nausea may be an issue, I would strongly recommend consulting with your veterinarian about your options for anti-nausea medications. I have included a link below to a website that has some good information on kidney disease. On the right side of the page there are more links with additional information. http://www.veterinarypartner.com/Content.plx?P=A&S=0&C=0&A=572 I hope that was helpful! Good luck.
