My puppy's lip is raw and bleeding. What should I do for the wound?

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 4 months and 17 days old | 75 lbs

Just came home and my 4.5 month puppy has a raw sorta bloody spot on her lips. Not sure what it is.

Poor little Harriet! It could be that she injured herself while you were gone. I would gently clean the area with warm water and antiseptic soap. Keep the wound clean and dry, and monitor it for signs of infection. If you see redness, swelling, warmth to the touch, or pus, then it is infected ands he will need to see the vet for antibiotics to treat it. I hope this helps!

My dog has been scratching his left lower lip (jowel sp?) to the point that is is now raw and bloody. Any idea what could be irritating it and/or how to clean it? He does this sometimes.
It looks like your dog could be suffering from lip fold pyoderma, an infection of the skin on the lower lip. Often oral antibiotics are needed at least initially to treat this condition. For now clean the area with mild soap and then keep it as dry as possible. If your dog is running with his foot an e-collar can help stop this until he gets in to see the vet, to check and see if this is indeed his problem.

I'm not sure what happened, but she has some shallow abrasion on her lower lip and side. They are missing a little skin, but nothing deep and she isn't bleeding anymore. Should I put anything on it?
Hello, sorry to hear about your pup. Its likely that she may have bit his own lip. Other causes include lip fold pyoderma. Both are usually benign and resolve on their own. You may clean the area with skin sensitive baby wipes to keep it clean. Topical antibiotics such as neosporin are often discouraged as dogs may easily lick and ingest this. If the area does not improve within 3-5 days then he should be seen by a veterinarian as she may need additional oral medications. If you think the abrasion is larger and may need stitches then he should be seen today or you may post a picture of the area on here. Hope this helps and best of luck.

19 month old Great Dane. Chewed the trim off of the corner of the wall and not has an upper lip abrasion that she repeatedly licks and it bleeds. What can I put on her face that she will inevitably lick off?
Silly Molly! It can be so frustrating trying to get a lip abrasion to settle! You could try putting a little bid of sudocreme or savlon antisceptic cream on the lip, or failing that some vaseline to act as a barrier. She will likely lick it off no matter what. If it is very superficial it should eventually settle down, however if it is getting worse she may need antibiotics and medicated cream from the vet.

Dogs lip got cut when we were playing with the frisbee. Not sure if he needs to go to the vet or not. Not bleeding much but a bit. Not sure if it’ll heal alone though. Thanks a ton for the help

This should heal without problem, and I would keep an eye on it for signs of infection. My dog has a cut and swollen lip. She won't stop licking it and it's been bleeding. I have photos. Can someone help?
It's unfortunately not possible to post pictures here, it's only possible through our private consultation system. A swollen lip can be caused as a result of a trauma (injury) or insect bite. If it is bleeding a lot I would recommend taking her to the vet as it is quiet difficult to treat at home, it's a delicate location to stop the bleeding or prevent the dog from licking it. If it's just bleeding a little bit and slightly swollen, it is likely to get better within a few days, try to keep the area clean as much as you can, avoid feeding wet food and make sure her water is changed several times a day.

The very top of my dogs nose is raw and was bleeding the other day. I just want to make sure it's nothing serious. How I can treat it?
Your dog may have rubbed it raw, under the couch or through the fence maybe? I suggest washing the area gently with antibacterial soap and water. Apply a warm washcloth 2-3 times a day for five minutes at a time to help keep it clean and draining. After washing and the compress, dry thoroughly and apply a dab of antibiotic ointment that **does NOT** contain hydrocortisone to the wound. Steroids will slow healing. An OTC triple antibiotic ointment will suffice. Rub it in well and don't leave any excess for your pet to lick off. If it does not show signs of healing or if your dog develops a fever, loses his appetite, starts vomiting or has diarrhea have him seen by your veterinarian right away. Potential cause may include allergies, infection, automimmune disease or even cancer. An e-collar (cone) may be used to prevent rubbing or pawing.

My puppy hit her nose on the corner of my washer and it caused her to cut part of her lip. Like under her nose to the left the lip is unattached to where it should be . Should I be extremely worried ? She keeps licking it which makes me feel like it
This is a quite deep and serious wound and would require a stitch up to heal. An immediate check up would be needed as appropriate treatment would include antibiotics and anti-inflammatory/and pain relief medications. Unfortunately persistent licking will cause infection in the long term. My dog got bitten on the lip by his Mom what should I do?
Ouch, poor Kobi. I don't see any bleeding, and it doesn't appear as if the bite is deep. Gently wash the area with warm water, and keep an eye on it. If you see any redness, swelling, pus, or it's warm to the touch, then it's infected and he will have to see a vet. Best of luck.

My dog has had raw skin on outer and inner lip that's very swollen and oozing out blood and other drainage. It is starting to spread to other side. Beem going on for five days...
I am so sorry Spanky is having this issue. I would recommend bringing Spanky to a veterinarian. The reason for this is to not only clean up the lesion, but to also dispense medication and see if we can figure out the cause of this. This could be from allergies or from a cut or scratch that Spanky kept bothering with and it just got infected. I hope Spanky feels better soon and thank you for using Boop by Petco!

Rayne chewed a plastic food bowl and cut her upper lip. She licks everything. What can I put on this? It almost seems her lip is cracking. Threw bowl away. Thanks
A check up, appropriate disinfection and possibly antibiotics (oral, topical or in a shampoo formulation) are needed to speed up healing process and avoid possible infection. Disinfection may be started at home with very diluted hibiscrub or betadine or salted water baths (apply it and then rinse it carefully). Buster collar may be useful as well to avoid any scratching.
