Why is my dog having breathing issues, lethargy, and penis discharge?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Male | unneutered | 50 lbs

My male 5 year old pit mix has been sick for about a week. He's been lethargic, not eating much, has lost some weight, has a runny nose and his breathing sounds like he has phlegm built up. Today I found a cream colored discharge on his penis, and sometimes he has a whine like he's in pain that I've never heard before. What could this be?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Lethargy, inappetence, weight loss, nasal discharge and abnormal breathing sounds sometimes can be observed with an upper respiratory infection (think of it as a sinus infection just like humans get). Sometimes it is severe enough that it travels to the lower respiratory system (lungs) and causes pneumonia. Whining could potentially be associated with this while penis discharge is likely a separate issue. I recommend that you have Honkey evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Your veterinarian is likely to run some bloodwork and take chest radiographs to rule out pneumonia. Good luck! I will keep my fingers crossed that he gets better soon!
