My yorkipoo has diarrhea with blood. When should I see a vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Yorkipoo | Male | unneutered | 45 lbs

Hi! I have a 3 year old yorkipoo who for the past day & 1/2 has been having running diarrhea. Just a while ago I found a very small place of diarrhea w/just a little bit of blood. He has been acting himself. I’m kind of freaking out... (the second pic is from when I wiped it up)

When there is blood in the stool I do become a little more concerned. I would recommend a bland diet of boiled chicken and rice, however I would still recommend an examination with a veterinarian tomorrow. That being said if he had a very bloody stool tonight, one that looks like raspberry jam, then he should be seen immediately. If he is developing a problem called HGE they can get very sick very quickly. If he starts vomiting that also increases my concern. I hope he improves quick.

This presentation is usually due to a colitis, inflammation/infection of the last part of the intestine. As most of the times this is dietary related, I would suggest to withhold food for the next 8-12 hours and then start feeding with a bland diet based on boiled chicken and rice in small portion every 6 hours for the following 48hours. Then gradually reintroduce the normal diet over 5 days. I would definitively recommend a veterinary check up if the signs persist or you notice more diarrhoea, vomiting, lethargy or inappetence. Hope this answer was helpful, but please do not hesitate to contact us again on the forum or by requesting a consultation if you have any more questions or to discuss it any further.

It sounds as Mason is suffering from a gastrointestinal condition, possibly an infection. it could also be due to ingestion of a foreign body material. i would recommend taking him to the vet the first chance you get, he will need to be checked first, if the vet thinks it's a simple gastrointestinal infection he will need an antibiotic course and a special food for a few days in order to get better.
