My dog has recurring dark crusty skin spots. Is it allergies?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Female | spayed | 65 lbs

I have a 10 year old shepherd/chow mix, and every once and a while she would get a dark crusty scab on her skin. It didn't seem to bother her, but we took her to the vet anyway, yet after months of testing there was no conclusion. Recently, she seems to have had an outbreak, 25 to 30 spots appearing suddenly, turning dark and seeming to still not bother her. These spots start off like a crusty scab and bleed when they're cleaned, but heal after about a day. Her food is part homemade/nutrish food

She may have allergies to food or to something in the environment that keeps causing the breakouts and that is why it is recurring or the infection is it getting treated long enough. You can try a hypoallergenic diet diet with a single meat and single carbohydrate source ( royal canin rabbit and potato). I would go to your vet to have treated again and clear he infection, then discuss long term allergy control medicine such as Cytopoint or Apoquel
