Can I mix dog kibble with rice to lower protein for an inactive dog?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Cavalier King Charles Spaniel | Female | spayed | 5 years and 3 months old | 17 lbs

Can I feed my dog half natural Balance kibble mixed with half white rice to lessen the protein content slightly? She's not active at all and I don't think she needs much protein. Is this ok, why or why not? Thanks! The natural balance is 20% protein.

Natural Balance is not a high protein food. I currently have my 14 year old on Natural Balance (who is very inactive), and he does well on that protein amount. The problem with feeding 1/2 rice is that you will throw off all the other nutritional factors in the diet (not just the protein), so it won't be a balanced diet anymore. I hope that was helpful!
