Why does my dog have a circular dry skin patch and bump on his nose?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Labrador Retriever | Male | unneutered | 2 years and 4 months old

I can't get ahold of my vet... but my dog started with a perfect circular patch of dry skin on his snout just before his nose. A day or two later, it blew up and looked horrible. I've been cleaning it and it has scanned over but it's still a huge bump on his nose. What could the cause of this be?

I don't like the look of this. With it so round and well demarcated I would guess it's from a spider or insect bite. You can clean this with a warm cloth and a mild shampoo or soap. Rinse it well and when it's dry apply a thin film of antibacterial ointment on it. I would have this examined in the next few days as it could be a fungal infection from rooting in the ground also. If there is any question as to the cause your veterinarian can do a skin scraping of it and get a diagnosis after looking at the cells under the microscope. Then they can treat it with the appropriate medication. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to help you care for Taz.
