Dog hasn't pooped after diarrhea meds. Is white around anus normal?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Beagle | Female | spayed | 29 lbs

My dog was having bad diarrhea for a couple of days. I took her to the vet yesterday. She had no fever or abnormal swelling so the vet prescribed her Metronidazole to help her form stools again. She was also given an antidiarrheal. I have given her 3 Metronidazole so far, every 12 hours as prescribed, and I gave her one antidiarrheal yesterday over 24 hours ago. She has not pooped once yet. Is that normal? Also she has some white around her anus. Is that normal from all of her problems recently?

HI and thanks for posting on Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Sometimes the antidiarrheal medication can have this temporary effect on bowel movements. Not uncommon. You may speak to your veterinarian about this and whether the dosage should be decreased. Not certain exactly what the white around her anus could be, but it may be dried mucous from the diarrhea she had been having. I hope this helps and I thanks again for your post!

As long as she isn't straining to defecate then I don't think you need to worry that she hasn't gone. It sounds like the Metronidazole and anti-diarrhea medication worked to stop the diarrhea and it might take her a day or so to get back to normal. I am not sure what the white is around her anus but you should monitor it and have your vet take a look at her if it doesn't resolve or seems worse.
