Why is my dog reverse sneezing and snorting after ear meds?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Dachshund | Female | 12 years and 7 months old | 18 lbs

My dog is recovering from having a bacteria and yeast infection in her ears. We took her to the vet and he gave us some antibiotics for her and it cleared it up. Now, I have noticed that she's forcing air out her nose in short bursts, almost like she's trying to get something out of her nose. This sometimes leads to her reverse sneezing & shes been doing reverse sneezing more than ever. Do you think the antibiotics have weakened her system and she's picked up a respiratory infection? Allergies?

It would be unlikely that the antibiotics are the cause of her sneezing and breathing issue. She could have allergies, an infection, foreign body in her nose, etc. Call your vet and give him/her an update. Your vet may be able to prescribe an anti-histamine to see if that helps. If not, she should be rechecked by your vet to determine the cause and treat.
