Pet's info: Dog | Standard Schnauzer | Male | neutered | 8 years and 5 months old | 35 lbs
Can eating tomato leaves affect blood sugar? My 35lb. standard schnauzer ate tomato plants (lots) and was very sick and at the vets for several days. All symptoms seem to have passed but the vet says my dog is now diabetic. Is this just coincidence or could it be from the poisoning?

Hi and thank you for your post on Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! To my knowledge, eating tomato leaves do not have an impact on blood sugar. Eating tomato leaves, while they may cause GI upset like vomiting or diarrhea, are rarely toxic in dogs and cats. Schnauzers actually are pre-disposed or developing diabetes, so this is not uncommon in these breeds. It may have just been a coincidence. I hope this helps and thank you again for posting!
