In the case of a cat with liver problems If the cat itself produces the amino acid methionine from which it produces SAMe, why is it dangerous to give the cat methionine rather than the recommended SAMe? This question is asked because it is difficult to administer the SAMe to some cats.

Hi and thanks for your post on Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! When the liver is not functioning well, it cannot convert methionine into SAMe. By giving just Methionine to patients with liver disfunction, it builds up in the system and is not converted into SAMe. Methionine can intensify hepatic disease as excess of it breaks down into alcohols and waste products which are harmful to the liver. It can also cause hemolytic anemia in cats. I hope this helps answer your question!
