My dog keeps licking her injured paws. What can I do to help?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 50 lbs

I was out of town and a friend accidentally left one dog (Lucy) locked in the bathroom for a couple hours and she clawed at the hardwood floors the whole time. It's been a couple days and she is still constantly licking both paws. We tried neosporen and the cone of shame but it's the blowup kind and she can still lick them with it on. Trying to get her in to the vet, but I thought I would see if there were any other things I should try. No foreign bodies seen. Sheppard / Rhodesian Ridgeback mix

From your picture I'm concerned about infection, and often oral antibiotics are recommended for skin infections. While you're waiting to see your veterinarian the main thing you should do is try to prevent Lucy from licking, which will be easier said than done! Even though the hard plastic e-collars look sad, most of the time they are the best way to prevent licking. You could also try putting a dog bootie on her feet if you think she would leave it on.
