Why is my dog walking sideways and falling, but otherwise normal?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Yorkshire Terrier | Female | spayed | 8 years and 7 months old | 6 lbs

My dog has suddenly started walking sideways. When she tries to walk straight she always goes to the right. When she shakes as if there is water on her, she sometimes falls over. She's eating and drinking fine. Plays fine too. Everything else is normal so do you know what this could be?

There can be numerous reasons that this may be happening to Zooey and most likely you will need to have her checked out by your vet to determine the cause. She might be suffering from an ear infection that is deep enough to affect her equilibrium, she may have some weakness in one or more kegs caused by arthritis or an injury, she may have arthritis in her spine. These are just a few of the possible causes. I would recommend a general exam for her to see if a cause can be detected.
