My dog is uncomfortable after surgery. Can I give her old tramadol?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Pit Bull Terrier | Female | spayed | 1 year old | 61 lbs

My pup recently had to undergo surgery to remove a sewing needle that she had swallowed from her stomach. The pain meds the emergency vet had given her have run out and she seems to still be uncomfortable. I do have leftover tramadol that her vet had given her after being spayed 4 months ago. Am I able to give her that medication to help her relax?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I'm sorry for all that Brooklyn has been through. It is fine to use the tramadol as prescribed at the time of her spay but I recommend that you call your Vet first and describe the symptoms that Brooklyn is having. They may want to see her first to determine why she is still painful this far out from surgery. I hope this helps and I wish you both the best.
