Dog's seasonal allergies: Should I use Apoquel or increase Prednicare?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Pug | Female | spayed | 6 years and 11 months old | 14.5 lbs

I'm seeing my vet later with my dog with multiple allergies, we earlier discussed apoquel Through summer lily has managed on 1mg of prednicare and piriton but in autumn her face itching really kicks in resulting in numerous eye ulcers between now and spring I have kept away from apoquel because of the side effects but am now left with either upping the prednicare or trialing apoquel for winter Is the half and half approach better or am I just doubling the amount of toxic chemicals in her body

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Sorry to hear about Lily's allergies. I would highly advice that you consider Apoquel. This medication is very effective to decrease the itch and help with the clinical signs associated with allergies that you describe. The best thing about Apoquel besides its efficacy is that you can stop it at any point so you can consider using it just for the time being while she is affected by allergies the most. That is how I use it for my own dogs and they are going great. Good luck and have a nice day!

Hello. I am not sure if Apoquel or Cytopoint are available in the UK, but they have worked very well for many itchy dogs here. If not, chronic steroid use may be the only thing to keep her comfortable ( have you tried Atopica ?). She should be on a good omega 6 fish oil supplement & possibly a hypoallergenic diet. Antihistamines do not always work, but some dogs will require less steroids with antihistamines like loratadine, cetirizine or hydroxyzine. Sometimes you have to weigh the risks of a medication vs. the benefits. As long as you closely monitor Lily's health for the most notorious side effects with regular blood work, then any problems can be addressed very early.
