My dog has a raised bump on her side she keeps biting. Is it a vet emergency?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Female | unspayed | 2 years and 8 months old | 8 lbs

Hello! I got up in the middle of the night to go to the restroom & my dog was whinning, not sure if it's from the bump or if she was just needing help getting on the bed but I went to pick her up & I noticed a raised bump on her side. She does seem to keep trying to reach it & bite at it. She lets me touch it. But am not sure what it is from & I didn't notice it last night when I was petting her. Not sure if I need to worry & rush her into the vet or not? She is a Morkie/terrier mix. 3 yrs old.

Daisy sure is cute!! So sorry she is having this issue. That looks like an open wound that is oozing. The lump could be an abscess or cyst that has ruptured. I would not consider this an emergency but I would try to take her in for an exam during your vet's regular business hours. It is very hard for me to tell much without seeing her in person. Hope this helps. If you have more questions please feel free to post again! Best wishes.
