When can my new puppy in Hawaii safely go outside after parvo shots?

Hi! I live in Hawaii and just got a puppy. Everyone says you have to wait till they're 4 month old and get their 3rd parvo vaccine before they can touch the ground outside your yard. Is this paranoia? How common is parvo?

Parvo is very common in Hawaii and very deadly too. the third parvo vaccine can be done as soon as 12 weeks of age though, depending on when the second vaccination was done (at least 2 weeks prior to that).

As long as your puppy stays current on his [vaccination series](https://www.petcoach.co/article/vaccination-recommendations-for-puppies-puppy-shots) (boosters every 3-4 weeks until at least 16 weeks of age), he can certainly go on walks in your neighborhood. In fact, it's very important to get him out and about at this age since the critical [socialization](https://www.petcoach.co/article/socialization-of-your-puppy) period for dogs last from 6 to 16 weeks of age - so he needs to be out seeing the world, the sooner the better. I would recommend avoiding [dog parks](https://www.petcoach.co/article/dog-parks-fun-and-games) and other busy areas where large numbers of unknown dogs have been, but it should be fine to walk him in quieter areas.

While it is unlikely that there is any viable parvovirus left in your environment, you are doing perfectly by keeping your new puppy away from any sources that may be infectious. Once your puppy will have had its third set of vaccines it should be well protected against a parvo virus infection. Give the vaccine about 2 weeks to fully work (the body's t-cells will need a bit of time to make specific antibodies against all the diseases you vaccinated for) and you can then take your puppy everywhere .

Hi there and thank you for using Boop by Petco to address your concern. It is still possible for Moana to get Parvo regardless of the current vaccines. She is not fully vaccinated and is at the age where she is susceptible the most to the parvo virus. If she is showing symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, abdominal pain, etc. then I would recommend having her examined by a veterinarian so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made. I wouldn't take Koda into the backyard just yet because parvo can live in then environment for months. If her shots aren't complete, she still runs the risk of catching it from the environment. I'd take her in the front yard if your previous puppy hadn't gone there, but wait until she is fully vaccinated before taking her into the backyard. Best of luck!

Congrats on your new puppy! Because you will not have a private yard and cannot be sure that your area will be virus free, Niko should stay confined from public areas until at least two weeks after his final shots at 16 weeks of age. Parvovirus can live in the environment outside for up to a year, so it's extremely important to make sure he has no contact with that, or any other potential life threatening viruses. You can train Niko to use pee pads instead until he is fully vaccinated, and then work on house training him.

Thanks for visiting Boop by Petco. It’s good to hear that your pup is doing well after contracting such a deadly virus. He is one of the lucky ones. To answer your question, the virus can shed in a pets poop for 10-14 days after being cured; therefore I would recommend waiting 15 days before allowing him to be around other pets. Even then I would probably only have him around pets that you know are vaccinated. It wouldn’t hurt to wait a full 3 weeks before having him go to dog parks and walking trails. Ok so luna is 7 weeks and she cant get her vaccines until 8 weeks(at least that's what my vet said) she has an appointment already made for when she turns 8weeks but about 15mins ago she managed to open the sliding glass door screen and she went out
Hi there. It's normally fine for puppies to go out in your yard, walk around the neighborhood, etc. at this age unless you have reason to believe that your area is particularly high-risk for parvo or other diseases. Puppies are usually well-protected by maternal antibodies from their mothers until they are 7-8 weeks of age, so it's unusual to see puppies in this age group come down with parvo in my experience. So I wouldn't be overly concerned :) Just go ahead and start her vaccines as scheduled, and keep her away from high-traffic areas with lots of strange dogs (dog parks, pet stores, etc.) until she's finished with her vaccinations. Other than that, it's fine for her to live her life like a normal puppy.

Parvovirus is always a concern for any pet who has not received it’s for vaccine series. He should be isolated with no walks until he has received at least two vaccines boosters. Each vaccine takes 7 to 10 days to take full effect. After two weeks, most owners will start to socialize their puppies. He should not go to public areas such as parks. Parvovirus lives in the ground for up to one year after it is shed in dog’s feces. He should meet other dogs and your friends dogs who are healthy and fully vaccinated are fine. Puppy classes are typically OK as well, just carry him through the pet store so that he is not smelling in areas accessible to the general public. The vaccine series is typically completed around 16 weeks of age and after that he will be fully protected and free to go anywhere. I have a new puppy a mini Australian Shepherd she was born in January she will be 10 weeks on Saturday and has had her 1st set of shots and has an appointment on the 10th for her second set will she be able to go outside and stuff after her 2nd dose
Thank you for submitting your question regarding Bella. She can certainly go outdoors in your yard. She can do short walks in areas that are not frequented by other dogs. What you want to avoid is high traffic areas for dogs such as dog parks, common areas in apartment complexes or hiking trails until she is fully vaccinated. I hope this information helps!
