Is it normal for 5-day-old kittens to pant when it's not hot?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Persian | Male | unneutered | 4 days old | 100 lbs

Some of my kittens have been panting and its not even hot. Just a bit concerned as there only 5 days old. Is this normal?

rapid breathing is not uncommon in kittens but if he is breathing fast with an open mouth it is definitely not normal, at this age it is usually caused by aspiration pneumonia (milk aspiration to the lungs). in such a case you would need to take them to the vet in order to get it checked and treated ASAP.
