My dog is circling, head down. Is it a stroke? Should I go to ER?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Beagle | Male | neutered | 10 years and 3 months old | 36 lbs

Hi- My dog suddenly started to walk in circles to the right, with his head and tail down. He can only seem to lay on his left side and may have trouble navigating around objects. I don't know if he's had a stroke or simply a sore muscle. I'm trying to determine if I should see the Vet in the morning or visit the ER tonight. He's a 10yr old male Beagle and hasn't complained/made any noises since his happened or when I pick him up since the stairs are hard. Thank you

Hello, thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. I am so sorry for your concerns with Ziggy, but any acute change in behavior & mentation indicates a possible neurological disturbance. It would be in yours & Ziggy's best interest to have him seen this evening rather than waiting til morning. Not only can they make him more comfortable, they may be able to address some issues that may become irreversible as the hours pass. Hopefully, he will be feeling better soon. Take care.
