My dog won't eat, has diarrhea, drinks water, vet said fine. What now?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Golden Retriever | Male | neutered | 85.5 lbs

My dog has not been eating for going on 3 weeks now. He will eat random things like treats, bones, etc. but will not touch dog food, chicken, or beef. He drinks a lot of water. We took him to the vet and got an exam and X-rays and they said he was fine, and no parasites from a stool sample. So they gave us an antibiotic for him to take. He gags it up and won't take it. So he still has diarrhea for about a week now, and will not touch food.

Poor guy. It sounds like he could use a follow up visit for sure. He does not sound well and could have a blockage that is not showing up well on the x-r-ray or another underlying illness such as kidney disease, liver disease or even a possible urinary tract infection that has now become systemic. I don't see where you mentioned any bloodwork or a urinalysis was ran on him to check for these potential underlying problems, so that would be the next recommended diagnostic test to run to hopefully get a proper diagnosis and appropriate treatment plan for Chevy. I hope this helps and best of luck moving forward with his care. I hope he feels better soon!
