What's the best way to store dog food: bag or airtight container?

Should I leave my bag of dog food in the original bag with a bag clip or empty it into a glass container? Which helps prevent it from oxidation and spoilage?

Great question! I always keep my dog food in an airtight plastic container. It helps keep it fresh, and the container also prevents any other creatures from getting the food such as insects. I recommend a container. I hope this helps :-)

Buying cat food from a sealed bag is definitely best. I don't recommend buying from an opened sack. You did a great job by putting the food in an airtight container and I would keep doing that after you open a sealed sack to keep the food stored fresh. Hope this helps. Great question!

I have biscuits made with whole wheat flour and other ingredients. How long will they be fresh for once opened? Is 2 years an ok amount of time to keep opened treats? (In a sealed container)
Properly stored, they may last about 8-12 months before becoming stale or contaminated. An air tight container in a dry, dark location is best. Freezing may extend shelf life, especially regarding homemade biscuits. I would hesitate to use biscuits that are two years old regardless of storage method.

Is it more likely for dog food with grains in it to be infested with bugs or can this happen to any dog food? Please explain. I'm thinking of switching my dogs food so something with grains and I'm wondering if this will store well.
Hello. Any food can become contaminated with bugs if it is not stored properly, or sits too long in a warehouse. Do not buy any damaged or repaired bags & avoid bags that are marked down in price. You can also avoid any problems at home by keeping an open bag of food in a tightly sealed container & only buying a months worth of food at a time. Thanks for using Boop by Petco.

We want to buy bigger bags of kibble because it's cheaper that way, but Kiba eats small amounts. Does it go bad fast or is it okay to keep it longer?
Most manufacturers print a "best by" date on the bags of food. Storing the food in its original bag inside an airtight container in a cool, dry area will slow degradation and protect the food from vermin. You may end up spending more money (in the form of wasted or bad food) if you buy too much though. Hi, thanks for using Boop by Petco! If the bag containing the food was air tight and non-pourous it is likely fine. Even if it wasn’t stored with essential oils, 3 months is a long time to store dog food. We worry about mold formation and these foods usually have an expiration date. I’d remove the food from the closet with the essential oils. If it smells like the oils when you open the bag, discard the food. Have a good day

That's a good question. If the paint was all nice and dry, it should be fine. It's good to keep food in an airtight container, even better if you put the original bag itself in an airtight container. This prevents oxidation. I'm not sure where paint buckets fall on the airtight scale. It's likely safe, but if you don't need to use it, I'd probably avoid it just in case.

Hello. Dog kibble has organic compounds like fats, just like any other perishable food might have. Generally, if a kibble is not used within a month , it is a good idea to put the remainder in the fridge or freezer to prevent the breakdown & loss of essential vitamins & nutrients & rancidity of the fatty acids. As long as the original package seal is not broken, a food might remain relatively fresh for months, but once opened, it is good to try & use the entire contents within 4-6 weeks. The recommendation of how long a food lasts is usually arbitrary and often not based on any studies, so it's difficult to say how accurate this information is. Of course, storing food for a long time can lead to infestations and growth of harmful microorganisms, but this depends on how the food is stored and the climate you live in. I've read that dry dog food can last up to a year once opened, but I've also read that it should be used within 4-6 weeks after opening. I contacted the company that I buy my food from and they said that the food will be fresh for 18 months after ope
The dog food may be "fresh" and palatable, but it will have lost some aroma and definitely a lot of the vitamins. Usually Vitamins stay actively working for about 6 months, so if you have a bag that has been opened for longer than 6 months the quality of the food is less than when it was originally opened. You can feed the food, but realize, that its nutritional value may be lower than when the bag was opened. If the manufacturer tells you that after 18 months the food was as good as when it originally was opened, you want to see the respective research proving that. In my professional opinion: the faster you use up the food after opening, the better.
