What's the best way to introduce two kittens of different ages?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | unspayed

I have 2 kittens. 1 female 3-4 weeks old. 1 male 2 - 3 months old. The male has been with me 3 weeks, the female just four days. Neither is spayed/neutered. They're currently in separate rooms and have only met with me holding one of them. Is it safe for them to meet and what is the best approach?

Hi and thanks for your post on Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach this morning! I would start them out by introducing them both separately behind a closed door and having them eat on each side of the door. Do this several times. This way, they can associate the smells of each other with something great- meal time! After that has been done, I would introduce them in a enclosed safe area where they can be watched and monitored. Associate the introduction with a meal or play time. I hope this helps and best to you and Brandy!
