My dog had a seizure. When to go to the vet to prevent brain damage?

Pet's info: Dog | Pomeranian | Female | spayed | 3 years and 3 months old | 10 lbs

My dog has had several seizures (gran mal, petit mal) within a few weeks. She’s seen the vet several times, but no solution yet. My question is-if she has a seizure overnight again, how long do I have to take her to the vet before her brain experiences a negative impact? Asking because the last one was 5 minutes long.

Oh no, poor Lou Lou! You will need to seek emergency veterinary care if her seizure lasts five minutes or longer. This is the point at which brain damage can occur, and she will need treatment right away to prevent that. I hope this helps!

Hi there and thank you for using pet coach to address your concern. For any seizure lasting longer than 5 minutes, I get very concerned about irreversible neurologic damage. During a seizure, the brain tends to overheat due to misfiring of neurons. This can lead to neurological abnormalities related to brain damage from the excessive heat produced by the seizure. If a seizure lasts for an hour I would most certainly expect irreversible neurologic damage to ensue. I would seek immediate veterinary care if this were the case so that the most appropriate Diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made. I hope this helps guide you in the right direction. Could a vet of been able to give my dog some sort of medicine to bring her out of a seizure that she'd been having for around 4 hours?
If Lady has been having a continual seizure for four hours, this is a medical emergency and she has to see a vet now. This is extremely serious, and she could suffer permanent brain damage from seizing for so long. She has to see a vet right away, please take her into one now. I cannot stress enough how much of an emergency her situation is right now.

Hello, Seizures can cause brain damage, particularly if they last for more than a couple of minutes. Your vet can perform a thorough neurological examination if you are concerned about permanent brain damage from Bell's seizures. I hope this helps.

Hi, I Have a 6 year old pitbull and every few months she seems to have what we believe is seizures. Is there a way to prevent these from happening or should we bring her to a vet to get her looked at?
Young dogs sometimes suffer from what we call idiopathic seizures (cause unknown) and older dogs that have never had a seizure before, can suffer from a brain tumor causing seizures. You should keep a diary of the seizures: situation that triggers it, time start, time ends, what the seizure looks like. If the seizure lasts more than 4-5 minutes your dog needs to see a vet right away, as this can cause hyperthermia and damage the brain. If you can you should take a little video of one such seizure to take with you to the vet and show him. Please make an appointment with your vet for an exam. He may want to put her on anti-seizure medication such as phenobarbital.

There is no need to take her to emergency care unless she has a seizure that lasts 5 minutes or longer. Then she needs to be taken in right away. Keep a diary of when she has a seizure, note the time it starts and ends and the time of day. Give this to the owner to be taken to the vet when they return. Should the dog have many (more than 5) seizures in a day, take her to her vet for adjustment of medication.

First of all the first seizure was very very long, 8 minutes is a long time for a seizure and that could have caused some longer lasting damage (although not permanent) to the brain, and maybe that is why Mango has several more small seizures. it is worrying that the seizures are happening so frequently, ideally he should see a vet ASAP as it could be life threatening if another long seizure occurs.

You should always take a dog to the vet that is having seizures. Blood testing should be done to rule out any underlying organ dysfunction that may be causing the seizures. If no underlying cause is found then there are medications that can be prescribed to help control the seizures but usually those are only prescribed if the seizures become more frequent. You know your dog best. If you are worried you should always have her to the vet.

Poor Dix! Don't panic.... if you can't make it to a veterinarian it's ok. What a vet can do is to help relax Dix with injectable intravenous medications like Valium, but there is no way to prevent the brain activity that causes seizures in the first place. If you can schedule an appointment with a vet in the near future for a basic exam and bloodwork then do so to rule out any metabolic disease like liver problems. Then your vet can decide if an anti-epileptic medication like phenobarbital will help stop future seizures. Hope that helps!

My 9yr old English springer has suffered with seizures since Feb 2016. In October he had 6 in a 24hr period. The vet increased his phenobarbital and provided anal diazepam, as it is regular for the seizures to be 5-9 mins long. Today he has had 12 se
12 seizures within 20 hours is a large number of seizures. Also the length of the seizures at 5 to 9 minutes is extreme. This does certainly point to a serious problem in the brain and likely to a tumor. Make sure to take your dog to the vet on Monday to adjust the dosage/add other medications. If the seizures last longer than 5 minutes , use the diazepam your vet gave you and if the seizure does not stop with the diazepam, you need to take Murray to an out of hours vet or ER right away.
