My senior cat has a tumor by his eye and nose. Can it be treated?

Pet's info: Cat | Maine Coon | Male | neutered | 13 years and 9 months old | 12 lbs

My 14 year old cat(male) was taken to the vet and she said he has a tumor by his right eye and nose and said there was nothing we could do. He sneezes alot also. She didn't say it was cancer just that it was a tumor. Is there anything I can do to get rid of this tumor.

I would have Bailey seen by another vet for a second opinion. Without seeing him in person, there's no way I can say if this growth can be removed or not, or if it is cancerous or not. One way to diagnose a growth as cancerous is a test called a fine needle aspirate. To do this, the vet sticks a small needle into the lump to get a sample of it's cells, and examines the cells on a slide under a microscope. It's usually painless to the animal, and relatively quick to perform. This would be useful to have done as whether or not the growth is malignant will inform treatment options for Bailey. I'd recommend taking him to another vet sometime this week. I hope this helps!

This is often differentiated by a test called a fine needle aspirate (FNA) which is a pain free, inexpensive and easy procedure which in most cases will help reach a diagnosis. Sometimes a biopsy is needed for a definitive diagnosis. I recommend that you have him evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. I am really hoping for something benign. It's usually painless to the animal, and relatively quick to perform. Once the cause of the lump is diagnosed, the vet can discuss treatment options if needed. I am so sorry to hear about Bear. I would be concerned about a tumor as well if it is a mass coming from that region. The next step if the drops did not help and it is bothering your cat would be surgical removal of the mass. Some tumors are curable by surgical removal and may never cause an issue again, other types may come back if not completely removed or are more aggressive. After the surgery, the vet can send the tumor off for histopathology to identify the type of cancer that is present and determine if it is likely to return.

This growth needs to be checked and analysed as there are many conditions and types of tumors that could look like that. take her to the vet, they will perform a fine needle aspiration on the growth and send it to the lab for analysis. when the result comes, the vet will advise what needs to be done according to the diagnosis.

Hi Your cat may seem fine, but even so, you should have a veterinarian check it out. There's no way to know what's going on by just seeing or feeling it. It could be an abscess, a mild trauma, or a more serious problem. The vet will preform a fine needle aspiration to take a sample for analysis and diagnosis.

Hello, as you may now cancer can only be diagnosed by looking at the cells of the area in question. Certainly, we can get a suspicion for cancer by assessing the gross appearance of the area in question. This means that although looking at Blue's nose I don't think it looks very aggressive to be considered a cancer, we are unable to tell unless we sample that area. Cats can get pigmentation changes with age, so this may very well be a normal change associated with his age and nothing you need to be concerned with. I would recommend monitoring the area for progression of this pigmentation change or any evidence of mass, ulcer, or thickening of the nose which would be more concerning for a cancer. Hello. This is very likely a benign tumor. I have a personal cat that has almost the exact same tumor on his chin that I am watching, too. But this is awful close to the eye, & if it gets any bigger, it may rub on the cornea. If you were my client, I would recommend removal. At 13, if your cat is relatively healthy with no underlying problems seen on bloodwork, then the surgery should go very smoothly. I would consider having it removed soon. There really is no way to know what the mass is without a surgical biopsy. I understand the hesitation going forward with surgery, but if it's growing you need to determine what it is, and biopsy is the best option to do so. This mass May just be inflammation or eosinophilia granuloma or it could be a cancerous mass. There are even cases of fungal disease causing nasal masses. If it is growing I would strongly recommend addressing it as soon as possible as surgery may become more difficult as it gets larger. Best of luck to Pol and I hope it is something easily treatable. Ouch! That definitely should be seen by your vet. They will need to take a sample, generally a fine-needle aspirate, to help determine what the growth is and if it needs to be removed, drained, or treated. If your kitty doesn't like going to the vet, you can call ahead to see if they can prescribe a sedative to give at home before bringing her in which can help make things less stressful (and easier for your vet to get a sample of the growth). Some veterinarians also provide home services, so if you feel kitty would be calmer at home, a housecall vet may be a good alternative.
