My Pomeranian has back pain, won't jump. Should I take him to vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Pomeranian | Male | neutered | 8 lbs

I have noticed that in the past 4 days my 5 yr old pom has stopped wanting to jump up on to the sofa, bed or chairs. He will jump down but not up. He has just started yelping at times when you pick him up. It seems like the pain is located in his back or his back legs. It is also hurting him to scratch his head with his back legs, he wimpers when he tries to scratch. Should I take him to have x-rays? Thank you!

Poor Little Fox! Yes, I would definitely take him into the vet for a physical exam and x-rays. You are correct the pain could be in his back or back legs, and those tests will help diagnose where the pain is coming from so he can be treated. I would take him into a vet first thing the morning, but if he appears especially painful tonight it's fine to take him into an ER vet. Rest him until he sees the vet, don't let him jump up or down from any furniture, and I would avoid picking him up as much as possible. Please do not give him any human pain medications, as many are toxic to dogs and can be fatal if given. Good luck, and I hope this helps!
