My puppy has diarrhea and is vomiting. Can I give him white rice?

Can I give my 12 week puppy white rice bc he has been vomited once today and had diarrhea. He hasn't eaten since yesterday. His appointment to the vet is 12:30 tomorrow. Please help.

Hi and thanks for your post. Yes you can give him plain white rice and boiled chicken. Plain canned pumpkin (not the pie filling) in his food can help as well. I hope this helps! Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach!

If your puppy is not yet weaned or on solid foods, then I would not give the boiled chicken and rice. Instead, I would seek out veterinary care in person to address the issue as diarrhea can cause dehydration quickly. Also let your vet know if your puppy cannot yet eat solid foods.

Poor Daisy. Puppies can certainly have sensitive stomachs. If puppies are eating and drinking normally, we will often recommend a bland easily digested diet consisting of ½ cooked white rice and ½ cooked white meat chicken (boiled without any skin or bones). If she does well with a bland diet and her diarrhea resolves, then you can slowly transition back to her normal diet over a few days. Diarrhea that continues for more than a few days, or is associated with blood in the stool, vomiting, lethargy or a poor appetite is a reason for a visit to your veterinarian. There are anti-diarrheal medications that your veterinarian can prescribe if needed as well as probiotics to help resolve the diarrhea. Yes, you can try giving Orcan a bland diet of rice and boiled chicken to see if that helps with his diarrhea. Should the diarrhea continue on the bland diet, he starts vomiting, he loses his appetite, and/or he becomes lethargic, you will need to take him into the vet. Best of luck, I hope this helps.

Hi there and thank you for using Boop by Petco to address your concern. I generally recommend withholding food for at least 8-12 hours and then feeding a bland diet such as the chicken and rice. I recommend feeding this diet at least 3 days past the resolution of the diarrhea and then transition to the regular food over a 3-5 day period until he is back on the dog food 100%. If the diarrhea continues, I would recommend switching to a new dog food altogether or consider adding in a probiotic such as Purina Fortiflora, which can be found online quite easily or at your local pet store. Before heading off to the veterinarian, you may want to try a day or boiled chicken, rice, and plain canned pumpkin (not the pie filling) to see if that helps with the diarrhea. If a day or two goes by and Max is still experiencing diarrhea, you may need to take him into his veterinarian for an exam and fecal testing. I hope this helps and best wishes to you and Max!

Hi, and thanks for your question. I would suggest to start feeding with a bland diet based on boiled chicken and rice in small portion every 6 hours for the following 48hours. Then gradually reintroduce the normal diet over 5 days. I would definitively recommend a veterinary check up if the signs persist or you notice diarrhoea, more vomiting, lethargy or inappetence. I would recommend initiating a bland diet as outlined below. However, with the symptoms you have described, it sounds as though he may also be dehydrated. I would recommend taking him in to be seen by a veterinarian so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made. He may need fluids administered under the skin for hydration and further testing (parvo testing) since he is so young and still has the potential to come down with parvo if he has come in contact with it. Hi there! Thanks for using Boop by Petco! It is difficult to know exactly what is going on based on that as vomiting and diarrhea can be observed with many conditions. Having said that, this can be observed in cases of gastroenteritis, dietary indiscretion, among many other conditions. I recommend that you withhold food tonight but keep water available at all times to avoid dehydration. You may start a bland diet of boiled chicken and white rice tomorrow. If clinical signs of vomiting and diarrhea continue, have him evaluated by your veterinarian. Good luck!

I'm sorry that Luna is not feeling well. We very commonly recommend a bland diet of 1/2 cooked white rice and 1/2 cooked white meat chicken (no skin or bones) for dogs who have diarrhea. I believe that Royal Canin GI has both chicken and rice in its ingredients, so I would not expect Luna to have any problem with that bland diet. If Luna does not eat, does not seem to feel well, vomits, has diarrhea for more than 3 days or develops blood in her diarrhea, then I would recommend having your veterinarian examine her. If she does well with a bland diet and her diarrhea resolves, you can slowly transition her back to her normal diet over a few days. Good luck! You may try withholding food for 12 hours (she can have water) and then try refeeding her the boiled chicken, rice, and I'd add a little plain canned pumpkin in there (not the pie filling) to see if that helps. If not, then I'd recommend Bella see her veterinarian as soon as possible to have her evaluated so she can get treated. I hope this helps and thank you for posting!
