Why did my Pug have sudden mobility issues but is now recovering?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Pug | Female | spayed | 3 years and 8 months old | 20 lbs

Two days ago my Pug who loves to jump and stand was hesitant to jump or stand. Yesterday she attempted to do those things but with not as much power and not as frequent as normal. Today she seems even better, almost back to normal. Her stool and energy have been normal throughout. Is there an explanation for this?

There can be many things that could cause this, the most common would be muscle sprain or strain in the hips or back. However, in the case of a Pug (or any breed the a short nose or a very long back) is more prone to having Intervertebral Disc Disease (or IVDD). Mild symptoms associated with a disc issue can present like a pulled muscle. If you see R having this type of issue in the future, I would recommend that she get checked out by a vet as soon as possible. It would also be wise to put her on strict kennel rest (similar to a human on bed rest) so that she can heal quicker.
