How much food is safe for my pregnant cat who's always hungry?

How much do you feed a pregnant cat? I give her 150% daily portions but she gobbles it up so fast and is constantly asking for more. I dont want her babies to be too big when the big day comes.

Great question! Pregnant cats are definitely hungrier than normal, and you can feed her up to double her normal amount safely. I would try portioning out her food so she gets multiple meals a day, which will hopefully satisfy her hunger. I hope this helps!

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Snowwhite. I recommend feeding her on demand at this point in her pregnancy. Cats typically eat less as labor approaches and for a period of time afterwards. Delivery followed by nursing will cause her to burn a huge amounts of calories so she is likely trying to prepare. Be sure to offer free access to water as well. She will need large quantities of water to produce enough milk. I hope this information helps!

Great question! It's recommended to feed pregnant mother cats a good quality kitten food during their entire pregnancy and while they are nursing - this is because they are using far more calories during this time then they normally would, and kitten food is higher in calories than a normal adult maintenance diet. She should have free access to food so that she can eat as much as she wants to, whenever she's hungry. Beyond that, it's actually not recommended to give any kind of additional supplements, calcium, etc. as this can throw off the balance of her diet and may make her more prone to medical issues like eclampsia (milk fever) after the kittens are born. So I would feed a good quality kitten food, and do everything else the same as usual :) I hope her pregnancy goes well this time!

At this point in her pregnancy, you should feed her kitten food. If she does turn out to not be pregnant, it will not hurt her to feed the kitten food right now. You will feed her this diet until the kittens are weaned and no longer dependent upon her for milk. The dry cat food is just fine for her. Do not give her anything like milk as this may upset her stomach. You should also talk to your veterinarian about deworming her for parasites. Some dewormers are safe to use in pregnancy and others are not so you will want to check what you have available with your local products. Please feel free to post any additional questions.

Cats are typically pregnant for 63-65 days, but pregnancy can range from 58-70 days. The pregnancy is divided into trimesters, and a healthy, well-fed queen will experience steady weight gain throughout the pregnancy. This weight gain appears to function as energy storage to support upcoming lactation. Overfeeding can result in obesity at the end of pregnancy, which increases the risk for difficult or prolonged labor and added stress on the kittens. Conversely, underfeeding during pregnancy can result in embryo loss, abnormal fetal development, spontaneous abortion or stillbirth, small litter size, and low birth-weight kittens who fail to thrive. It is important that the queen not lose weight or condition during this time, so monitor her weight and body condition, increasing food as needed. A highly-digestible, high quality kitten/growth/development formulation is generally recommended during feline pregnancy and all the way through until the kittens are weaned. I suggest Royal Canin

my cat is 19 days pregnant and for the past few days she have stopped eating her dry food and only wants to eat wet food. she just drinks water and is not at all interested in dry food. is it normal or anything to worry.
It is fines as long as she does eat and drink. Sometimes a cat's preference changes, especially when under a hormonal influence such as pregnancy. Feed her a good quality wet food twice daily and from day 40 of pregnancy , feed her canned kitten food as she will need the extra nutrition for the kittens' growth.

Cats are gourmets....if you feed her boiled chicken and she likes it better than her wet food, then she will shun her wet food and just eat her favourite food. Try offering her tinned kitten food rather than her usual wet food. This would be healthier than chicken only.

I have a cat, Bridget (Dec 9th 15), she's an indoor cat and is unvaccinated, but she got outside about three months ago, resulting in a pregnancy. Now, she's nursing 2 kittens, born July 15th 2017. My concern is about her extreme increase in appetite
It is normal for a nursing queen to require more calories and I typically recommend feeding kitten food that is higher in calories. It's also possible that she contracted intestinal parasites when she got outdoors, or even that she has another disease like diabetes. I would recommend taking her to a veterinarian. She could be examined, and you may want to discuss vaccinating her and the kittens as well - when cats escape once sometimes it happens again and it would be safest to have her vaccinated.

The other cats can eat this food as long as they do not suffer from kidney disease. It may, however, lead to weight gain due to the increased calories this diet will provide. Oh my, poor kitty. The vomiting is likely due to very little space in the abdomen and when the kittens move they activate the pressure receptors of the stomach which then thinks it is too full, and then empties itself. You need to feed her good quality kitten food, preferably canned and feed her small amounts over several feeds (I would feed her daily ration split over 4 feeds/day). Once she had the kittens, you can reduce that to three times/day. This should help her gain weight again.

There isn't really a goal weight for cats. The amount they gain depends on their nutrition and how many kittens they are creating. The most worrisome thing in pregnant cats is gaining too much fat from eating too much food during pregnancy. Your vet can help you determine if this might be the case.
