How to feed, deworm, and care for 4-week-old orphaned kittens?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | unneutered | 30 days old | 2 lbs

I have two 4 week old kittens. Their mom was treated by vet advise after kittens were born on August 24. I know that they were covered by her medicine. She was a wild cat that I befriended. She has decided to wean the twins and run off. I need to know what is safe for my 2 pound wonder twins. Also what do I use and when do I need to worm them?

How lovely of you to look after these two kittens! Since they are weaned, it's time to feed them a kitten formulated food. Kittens need higher amounts of protein, calcium, and calories than adult cats, and a kitten food would provide that for them. Brands I recommend include Royal Canin, Hill's Science diet, Purina ProPlan, and Iams. It's safe to deworm them now, and they should be dewormed every two weeks until they are three months old. At that point, they should be dewormed monthly until six months of age when they should be dewormed every three months. I recommend using Panacur, it's an excellent deworming treatment which you can get from your vet. At six-eight weeks of age, they will be old enough for their first vaccines. They will need flea treatments as well, and Frontline Spray is safe to use on them now. Once they reach seven weeks of age, you can use a spot on treatment such as Revolution or Advantage. I hope this helps!
