My Shih Tzu coughs when excited or barks. Is it serious? Vet needed?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Shih Tzu | Male | neutered | 1 year old | 12 lbs

Hello! I am concern about my 1 year old shitzu because he started coughing yesterday. It happens when he runs, barks, or gets exited. Two weeks ago his eyelids and mouth were a little bit swollen when he wake up in the morning, I think it was an allergy because it disappeared quickly without medication. I don't know if there is a relation between the two symptoms but just to let you know. Do you think the cough could be serious? Should I get him to his doctor as quickly as possible?

I'm sorry to hear that Axel is coughing. The most common reason we see a dog cough with barking or excitment is due to irritation in his throat. This is most commonly caused tracheobronchitis. Unfortunately, there are other things that can also cause this and the severity of tracheobronchitis can vary quite a bit. I always recommend having a dog with a cough examined to make sure there isn't any need for antibiotics. Often, we can give them a cough suppressant to help them get over it, but we want to make sure there isn't anything else going on. Here is more information on tracheobronchitis. https://www.veterinarypartner.com/Content.plx?P=A&S=0&C=0&A=600 I hope that was helpful! Thanks for using PetCoach.
