Why does my dog snort loudly and choke when excited or sleeping?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Male | unneutered | 2 months and 25 days old | 21.8 lbs

I've noticed that when Deuce sleeps it sounds like something may be blocking his airways. It sounds like a piece of paper hitting a fan. He does pull on the leash when we walk and sometimes he does get choked if he gets too excited and I can't get him away from the source of excitement fast enough. Should this be concerning?

If he is only making this noise while asleep I would not be too concerned about it. Just have your vet examine Deuce at some point to check his airway. He likely has a brachycephalic confirmation, which causes increased respiratory sounds when he is either excited or asleep. Here is more information about brachycephalic dogs and their care and precautions. http://www.veterinarypartner.com/Content.plx?P=A
