My dog has black spots on his face that won't heal. Is it cancer?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Golden Labrador | Male | unneutered

My yellow lab is about 8 years old and has 4 black spots that came up on his face. The flys won't stay off of it but it doesn't seem to hurt him. I've cleaned it with peroxide and put antibiotic ointment on it and it doesn't seem to be going away. It started out with a bleeding sore and had spread into 4 spots. Does he have cancer?

These are unusual spots on Marley. You are treating them correctly but since they are not going away I recommend you take him to your veterinarian to have an exam and they can do tests on these spots to see if they are cancer. They could be an infection with yeast or bacteria, mange, or benign growths. Like you though I am concerned and want you to get askin scraping, aspirate or biopsy of one of these soon so Marley can start treatment if needed. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to help you care for Marley.
