My dog got sand in his sheath. Should I worry about infection or vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Male | neutered | 15 years and 2 months old | 19 lbs

I took my 15y/o pug to the beach and he got sand on his penis and it retracted back in his sheath before I could fully clean it. I hosed it off, pulled the sheath back and used a wash cloth to clean it gently once I got home. I think most of the sand got out but if there's any left in the sheath should I worry about infection? Do I need to take him to the vet to get it thoroughly treated?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! The sheath produces fluids to lubricate the penis. This fluid should act as a natural flush for any foreign bodies. I would monitor for any heat, swelling, or foul smelling discharge and seek a vet if noted. Good luck and kisses to Rocky!
