My dog keeps throwing up water after drinking. Is it an emergency?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Miniature Pinscher | Male | 11 years and 8 months old

My dog has been vomiting for the past 12 hours and is constantly drinking water even though he vomits immediately after he drinks. I've read that it is advisable to not give him any food or water but he keeps searching for water. I'm worried that if I don't give him any water soon he might dehydrate but if I do, he will throw it up... Please tell me what to do, thank you in advance

Tino needs to see a vet immediately, it's quite serious that he is vomiting water. He clearly can't keep it down and you are correct that he will dehydrate quickly from this. In a senior dog, dehydration can have serious consequences on their kidneys. He needs IV fluids to prevent dehydration, which can only be given by a vet. The vet can also diagnose the cause of the vomiting, which can include kidney disease, liver disease, diabetes, GI illness, a foreign body, or cancer among others. The vet can give him a shot to stop the vomiting as well. Please take him into a vet right away.

Poor Lucy! It is very concerning that she cannot keep down water, and when that happens, I do recommend an immediate vet visit as the dog can quickly dehydrate. If money is a problem, you can try offering her small amounts of water (1/8 of a cup at a time) every two hours to see if she keeps it down. Measure out her water, and do not allow her to drink it too fast. If she keeps down that water, then yes it's fine to wait until the morning before contacting the vet. If she cannot even keep down small measured amounts of water, then she will need to see a vet as soon as possible. In that case, I would see if you can borrow money from family and friends to afford a vet, and I can give you some resources that may help. You can see if your vet accepts payment plans, if there is a low cost clinic in your area, or you can apply for Care Credit online. There is also an organization called Red Rover that give grants for treatment of sick animals, and you can see if you qualify for one of their grants. Best Friends also has a list of resources that offer financial assistance on their website. http://www.humanesociety.org/animals/resources/tips/trouble_affording_pet.html?credit=web_id91754962 https://www.redrover.org https://www.carecredit.com http://bestfriends.org/resources/financial-aid-pets http://lessonsfromaparalyzeddog.com/when-pet-owners-cant-afford-veterinary-bills/ http://www.dogheirs.com/resources-affordable-veterinary-care/ I hope one of these resources helps you if you need it, best of luck!
