My rabbit gained weight. Is it diet, seasonal, or a health issue?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Small Animal | Rabbit | Male | unneutered | 3 years and 6 months old | 5 lbs

Oliver was 5 pounds in the end of the summer. We have stayed on top of his diet and hasn't had any changes. He has gain 1 (almost 2) pounds. Could there be something wrong or because of seasonal changes he is just storing fat for winter?

In my experience the most common reason rabbits gain weight is due to over feeding pellets. Rabbits only need about 1/4 cup or less of pellets a day. If you are feeding more than this, I would suggest slowly decreasing the amount over several weeks. Bunnies should always have very slow diet changes to avoid gastrointestinal problems. Thanks for using Pet coach and I hope this was helpful!
