My dog has a leaking, smelly lump near her ear. Is it serious?

Pet's info: Dog | Labradoodle | Female | unspayed | 4 years and 8 months old

Hi. My labradoodle has lump between her ear and neck that is leaking a mixture of clear fluid and a small amount of blood. The lump doesn't stick out massively but does seem to cover around a 50p piece size on her skin/fur. Only noticed it as we thought she had food stuck to her.... her fur was matted. There is a slight small to it, a bit like the smell dogs have in their ears. She isn't off her food or water. I'm just concerned about the lump. Kind regards Amy x

This sounds like an abscess or hot spot. You can trim the surrounding fur to let the air in and stop the fur from getting stuck in the discharge. Clean the area with medicated shampoo or antibacterial soap, rinse it off, dry it and then apply a thin film of antibacterial ointment on it. If Rosie is scratching the area please use a restraint collar if needed. Once you clean up the area if it looks like a tumor then take Rosie in for an exam and they can do a needle aspirate and look at cells under the microscope to see if it's an infection or cancer. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to help you care for Rosie.
