My dog is overweight. Can I feed him more with low-calorie food?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | neutered | 45 lbs

I adopted Archie a year ago, he was about 3 yrs old and very underweight. I have been feeding him earthborn holistic, 1 cup in the am and 1 cup in the pm. He is now a few pounds overweight. I have been told by several people that 2 cups a day is not enough food and that I should switch to a low calorie food so he can eat more without weight gain. Any thoughts?

I agree that you should switch him to a low calorie diet, this way he will be able to eat a little more without gaining weight. start with an over the counter low calorie food, if within 2 months you do not see any result, switch him to a prescription weight control diet.
